Letter to the Editor

To the Editor, White Bear Press:
I was very troubled by a mailing sent by "DHC," the Democratic House Caucus, to some homes in the White Bear Lake Area, which suggested a "Fail/Pass" comparison between Doug Meslow's work on the School Board and my work as an Educator and former Minnesota Teacher of the Year. This was produced independently by the DHC, and I had no input or knowledge of it. The content of this mailing attacked the good work of our White Bear School Board during difficult times. It is not consistent with my beliefs or opinions. Contrary to what this mailing suggests, I support Superintendent Ted Blaesing and believe he is an exceptional leader who should be rewarded as such. Our School Board met the challenge of a $2.2 million budget reduction in a thoughtful and responsible manner.

The Minnesota Legislature dealt a terrible blow to our schools over the past few years. Under the guise of tax reform, the Legislature pushed a tremendous amount of financial instability back on to the shoulders of local school districts. School districts all across the state are facing serious budget shortfalls, and the education of our children is suffering as a result. Without question, our children need the support of each and every voter in passing the upcoming levy.

This race has been free of mud slinging and focused on issues until now. This unfortunate situation confirms my strong belief that it is time for serious campaign finance reform that will limit the ability of independent expenditures to speak on behalf of candidates. Doug Meslow and I pledged to each other to conduct ethical, positive campaigns on the issues. I am deeply upset that the DHC did not respect this pledge. The people of White Bear deserve better than what they were served by the DHC this past week.

Sincerely,

Brett Smith
Candidate - House District 53B
