Smith gives MN Voice to National Convention

State Minnesota Music Educators Association President and Mahtomedi Teacher Brett Smith has just returned from attending the National Music Education Conference in Nashville, Tennessee April 10-13. As State President, Smith helped to form National policy for corporate partnerships with educational organizations, and presided over symposium workshops. Smith said of his experience: "I feel strongly about professional development for teachers, and it is important that Minnesota have a strong voice for kids on the national scene. It is important to have a presence at this national event so that the children of our Minnesota schools benefit by bringing home examples of best practices and quality curriculum." This biannual event brings thousands of music teachers from around the world together to share music-making traditions through performances and workshops. Some of the world's greatest musicians and most talented school groups from all parts of the United States were heard at this conference. More than 200 symposium workshops, clinics, and performances were devoted to a wide range of music education issues, including early childhood music education, curriculum building, assessment strategies for performance ensembles and new technology. Other highlights included an evening performance by Chely Wright, an appearance by Sesame Streets', Bob McGrath, and composer Marvin Hamlisch.
